Psoriasis is
generally considered a skin condition. But the origin of Psoriasis actually
starts deep beneath the skin. Psoriasis
occurs due to disturbance in a person’s immunity system. Psoriasis is a chronic disease and lasts very
long even after regular treatment. Psoriasis can range between mild to moderate
to severe, depending upon the state of the affected person’s immunity system.
In normal
skins, a body takes about 25 to 30 days to produce new skin cells and shed the
old ones. In Psoriasis, this skin cells
are produced much faster than the normal rate. This happens because of
overactive body immunity system that triggers inflammation of skin. The new
cells thus produced are pushed to the surface of skin within 3 to 4 days
instead of usual 25 to 30 days. This condition creates a Plaque on the skin and
is called Plaque Psoriasis.
Body becomes
unable to shed the old cells under such situation and they start piling up on
top of each other. Rapid formation of
new skin cells keep on pushing the old cells to the surface and they start
forming red, itchy, flaky patches on the skin. The exact cause of Psoriasis is
still not known.
Treatment of Psoriasis
Since causes
of Psoriasis are still not clearly known and Psoriasis is considered as a
condition and not a disease, no systemic medication is yet available to cure
Psoriasis. Only symptomatic medication
is given to patients suffering from mild to moderate Psoriasis patients to
provide them with some relief from their itchy conditions and other related discomforts.
Creams, oils
or lotions are prescribes in cases of mild Psoriasis to lubricate the affected
areas, and to keep the area free from irritation and itching. Moderate cases of
Psoriasis need constant application of lubricating agents with some anti
itching agents to soothe the affected area. Severe cases of Psoriasis may need
some oral medication support.
Stem Cell therapy for Psoriasis
Stem cell
treatment for treating Psoriasis has been found effective in curing cases of
Mild to Severe Psoriasis. Relatively long period of stem cell therapy is needed
to bring Psoriasis under control. Sometimes the time needed is up to 13 years
of treatment with stem cells to get positive results.
Peripheral Autologous
Blood Stem Cells are found to be most effective in treating Psoriasis. Cases
of Psoriasis have been reported to be cured after transplanting Bone Marrow in
the patient’s affected sites. Cases of severe plaque Psoriasis is reported to
be relieved of the disease when transplanted with Autologous Blood Stem Cells from
Bone Marrow from the patient himself/herself at the sites of Plaque Psoriasis. Initially, the Psoriasis continued to flare
and the patient had to be given Methotrexate to help maintain control of the
disease, but later on, remarkable remission was observed in Plaque Psoriasis
and the patient was declared cure with no history of recurrence being reported.
Repeated
dose administration of stem cell transplants was also needed in some cases to
fetch positive results. But Stem cell
therapy certainly showed new light of hope to patients of Psoriasis, the
disease otherwise termed as incurable.
