Apart from being an effective remedy for burns, cuts, acne, and eczema, aloe vera is also good for other skin conditions like, dryness, irritation, itching, and wrinkles. Aloe vera is a succulent plant that belongs to the genus Aloe, which consists of around 400 species. While most species of this genus are natives to Africa, these plants can now be found in most of the arid regions across the globe. Among the different species that belong to the genus Aloe, aloe vera is the most popular one, and the name itself means true aloe. The history of aloe vera uses can be traced back to the time of ancient Egyptians. They considered aloe vera as the 'plant of immortality' and so, its leaves were buried with the deceased Pharaohs. It was also used for healing bruises and wounds, and as a laxative. Today, aloe vera is one of the important ingredients in various herbal medicines and cosmetics. This herb is used in various forms like gel, juice, and supplements. It is widely used as an effective remedy for various medical conditions and is very much in demand for hair and skin care.

Studies show that aloe vera contains compounds like, polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones, and lectins, which are believed to be responsible for its health benefits. Use of aloe vera gel is said to be effective for improving the texture and complexion of the skin. This is evident from the fact that numerous beauty products have aloe vera as an ingredient.

How to Use

This gel is available in the market under different brand names. You may either buy any of them or else, opt for pure aloe gel, which can be extracted from fresh aloe vera leaves. All you have to do is to remove the green rind of the leaves and use the pulp inside it. You may cut open the leaves and apply the gel directly, or remove the rind and then use the gel (make sure that the yellow sap from the rind is completely removed, as it can cause contact dermatitis in some people). Apply the gel on the face and wash it off after thirty minutes. Some people keep the gel overnight. You may also go for commercially available aloe gels and other aloe vera products like scrubs, creams, lotions and soaps. Face masks can also be prepared with aloe vera gel.

Aloe vera with oats and honey

You can make a face mask by mixing equal amounts (one tablespoon) of aloe gel, ground oats, honey and ground almonds. Apply it on the face and neck, and rinse off with lukewarm water after twenty to thirty minutes.

Aloe vera with yogurt

Aloe vera along with yogurt is said to work wonders for the skin. You may also add some cucumber juice to this mixture. Mix two tablespoons of fresh aloe vera gel with a tablespoon of yogurt and four tablespoons of pure cucumber juice. Apply on the face, and rinse after twenty minutes.
Aloe vera with oatmeal

You may use oatmeal, cucumber and aloe gel to prepare face mask. Take a small cucumber (peeled) and puree it in a blender. Mix two tablespoons each of oatmeal and cucumber juice. Combine well, before blending the egg white into the mixture. Your face mask is ready to apply.

The pure, natural one is always considered the best aloe vera gel for face, but if you find some commercial version more useful, you may opt for the latter.
